British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said that legislation will be introduced within weeks to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
According to the Financial Times, Keir Starmer intends to bring forward the measure, fulfilling a long-standing demand of Jewish groups and opponents of Iran’s religious government.
Until now, under British law, only non-state organisations have been designated as terrorist entities.
The Financial Times reports that this would mark the first occasion on which the United Kingdom designates the armed forces of a sovereign state as a terrorist organisation, while the European Union had already moved in February towards a similar classification.
The European Union has also signalled a willingness to ease economic sanctions imposed on Iran.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the European Union stands ready to relax sanctions on Iran.
He added that, in the event of an agreement, restrictions could be lifted in stages, noting that easing sanctions may assist in advancing negotiations.
