US President Donald Trump has made a series of explosive claims regarding the Strait of Hormuz, saying he has ordered the US Navy to take action against any boats laying mines in the vital global shipping route.
The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump said he had ordered the US Navy “to shoot and kill” any vessels attempting to place mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
He also claimed that US naval forces and mine-sweeping operations were already active in the area at an increased level.
“No hesitation” order for US Navy
Trump said there should be “no hesitation” in responding to any suspected mining activity in the waterway.
He added that mine-sweeping operations were being expanded and described efforts to clear the Strait as ongoing and intensified.
Claims of US control over strategic waterway
In the same series of posts, Trump further claimed that the United States had “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz.
He said no ship could pass through without approval from the US Navy and described the route as “sealed up tight” until Iran reaches a deal.
The Strait of Hormuz is widely regarded as one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, handling a significant portion of global oil shipments.
Comments on Iran’s leadership
Trump also made political remarks about Iran, claiming internal divisions within its leadership.
He suggested there was infighting between what he described as “hardliners” and “moderates,” while asserting that Iran was struggling to define its leadership direction.
There was no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding his statements.
The former president did not provide evidence to support his assertions about US operational control over the Strait or ongoing military actions.
His comments come at a time of already heightened tensions in the region, with global attention focused on energy security and maritime stability.
