United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump to extend the ceasefire.
The UN Secretary-General stated that Pakistan’s efforts at mediation are fully supported, adding that there is hope the talks will pave the way for a comprehensive and lasting solution, marking an important step towards de-escalation.
Guterres said that an opportunity has now emerged for diplomacy between Iran and the United States, urging all parties to respect the ceasefire and refrain from provocation.
According to UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the development represents a significant step towards reducing tensions and provides an important opening for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States.
The Secretary-General’s office has urged all parties to build on this progress, avoid any breach of the ceasefire, and engage constructively in negotiations.
He added that António Guterres also supports Pakistan’s role in facilitating talks, expressing hope that these efforts will help create conditions for a comprehensive and durable settlement.
