India, under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has failed to fulfil its global responsibilities.
The Modi administration has weakened both the country’s economy and its administrative machinery. Following economic setbacks, the government has now also demonstrated incompetence and failure on the international stage.
India has withdrawn its offer to host the global environmental conference, COP33. Modi had earlier, in 2023 at a conference in Dubai, put forward a proposal for India to host the 2028 summit.
Indian media described the decision as not merely the cancellation of an event but a significant blow to the country’s credibility. India has already missed two deadlines for submitting its 2035 national environmental targets.
According to international experts, stepping back from hosting the conference raises serious questions about climate action measures and India’s claims regarding leadership of the Global South.
Experts added that the move appears to be an attempt to avoid debate over the gap between India’s environmental commitments and its actions.
It is pertinent to note that Delhi ranks among the most polluted cities in the world and continues to harm the environment across the wider region.
