The Houthis in Yemen have threatened to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
In Sanaa, the deputy foreign minister of the Houthi administration said that United States President Donald Trump should stop obstructing efforts to establish peace. He said that Bab el-Mandeb is among the world’s most important maritime highways, linking the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea.
A large portion of oil from Gulf countries to Europe and Asia passes through this route; around 5 per cent of global crude supply, approximately 4 million barrels per day, moves through it.
It was stated that if Bab el-Mandeb were closed, up to 10 per cent of global trade would be halted, as it serves as the entry point to the Red Sea and onward to the Suez Canal for fast and low-cost trade between Europe and Asia.
Separately, it was reported that Iran had once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the movement of commercial vessels to a halt.
A spokesman for the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters said that the Strait of Hormuz remains under strict Iranian control and that no change has taken place in its status.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the strait would remain under control until the United States restores the movement of ships to and from Iran.
