In a major diplomatic development, US Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, signaling a possible pause in escalating regional tensions. The truce is set to begin later tonight.
According to Donald Trump, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire starting at 21:00 GMT (5 PM EST).
The announcement was made after what Trump described as “excellent conversations” with Joseph Aoun and Benjamin Netanyahu.
He said the agreement aims to pave the way for lasting peace between the two countries.
The ceasefire comes shortly after a historic meeting between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington, D.C..
It marked the first direct engagement between the two sides in 34 years, facilitated by Marco Rubio.
US leadership driving peace efforts
Trump said he has directed key US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, to work closely with both sides.
The goal, he added, is to ensure that the temporary ceasefire leads to a long-term and sustainable peace agreement.
Trump claims diplomatic milestone
In his statement, Donald Trump highlighted his global diplomatic role, claiming he has helped resolve nine wars and described this agreement as potentially his “10th.”
He urged all parties to move forward and “get it done,” emphasizing urgency in securing peace.
Lebanon welcomes move
Following the announcement, Joseph Aoun thanked Trump for his efforts.
According to a statement from his office, Aoun expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would continue to secure a lasting ceasefire and stability in the region.
