WhatsApp is working on a new privacy-focused feature that could change how users monitor their accounts.
The upcoming update will introduce real-time tracking of linked devices, offering an added layer of security.
The feature is still under development and not yet available for beta users.
WhatsApp’s new feature aims to give users greater visibility over devices connected to their accounts.
Currently, users must manually check the “Linked Devices” section to see active sessions. The upcoming update will change that by enabling real-time monitoring, allowing users to instantly view which devices are connected and active.
Smart alerts for suspicious activity
The most notable addition is a smart alert system designed to flag unusual activity.
Users will receive notifications only when both their primary phone and a linked device are active at the same time. This helps highlight potential security risks without overwhelming users with constant alerts.
For example, if someone is accessing a previously linked device—such as a public or shared computer—while the user is actively using their phone, the system will immediately notify them.
Designed to avoid notification overload
WhatsApp has intentionally made the feature non-intrusive.
Notifications will not be triggered when a linked device is used independently. Instead, alerts are limited to simultaneous usage scenarios, reducing unnecessary interruptions while still maintaining security.
The feature will be integrated into the Advanced Privacy Settings menu.
Users will have the option to enable or disable these alerts based on their preferences, giving them control over how they manage their account security.
At present, the linked device monitoring feature is under development and has not been rolled out for public beta testing.
However, it signals WhatsApp’s continued focus on strengthening account protection, especially as multi-device functionality becomes more widely used.
