The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered action in a long-running pension dispute involving a former employee of Pakistan International Airlines.
The case involves delayed pension payments spanning over two decades.
The court has also sought a response from the airline’s top management over the matter.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court directed that a former employee must be paid pension arrears covering 24 years.
The petition was filed by former PIA employee Mustafa Ansari, who stated that he was retired under a scheme in 2002.
His lawyer informed the court that pension and other benefits were initially granted under orders of the Sindh High Court, but the arrears have not been fully paid since then.
Court seeks explanation from PIA management
The court also issued a directive to the Managing Director of Pakistan International Airlines to submit a response regarding the delay in pension payments.
The bench warned that if the dues are not cleared before the next hearing, the MD may be required to appear in person before the court.
Key remarks during hearing
During proceedings, Justice Shahid Waheed questioned whether any law allows the non-payment of pension to retired employees.
The employee’s lawyer argued that other retired staff members were receiving their pensions regularly, highlighting unequal treatment in this case.
On the other hand, PIA’s counsel stated that instructions would need to be taken from the institution before proceeding with payment.
