An Indian national has been charged in Australia over the alleged sexual assault of a woman during a commercial flight from Singapore to Perth, according to Australian media reports.
The 52-year-old man is accused of committing non-consensual sexual acts against a female passenger seated next to him on Monday’s flight. The incident was reported to cabin crew, after which the woman was moved to another seat for her safety.
Authorities said the suspect was monitored by airline staff for the remainder of the journey, and police were alerted prior to landing. Upon arrival at Perth Airport, the man was taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
He has been charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of an indecent act without consent, and has been remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance on Friday.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal stated that authorities maintain “zero tolerance” for criminal behaviour on aircraft or at airports, adding that passengers have the right to feel safe throughout their journey. He also urged victims of any unwanted contact to immediately report incidents to airline staff or security personnel when safe to do so.
The case is being jointly investigated by the Australian Federal Police and Western Australia Police.
