Google has rolled out a major update for Gmail, extending its end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature to mobile devices.
The move enables users to securely send and receive encrypted emails directly from their smartphones.
Google announced that Gmail’s end-to-end encryption is now available on both Android and iOS devices.
With this update, users can compose and read encrypted emails natively within the Gmail app, eliminating the need for third-party tools or external email portals.
One of the key highlights of this update is its simplicity. Users with the Gmail app installed do not need to take any extra steps, as encrypted messages will appear just like regular emails in their inbox.
For recipients without the Gmail app, messages can still be accessed securely through a web browser, ensuring accessibility across platforms.
How encryption feature works
Google explained that users with a Gmail E2EE license can send encrypted emails to any recipient, regardless of their email provider.
- Gmail users: Encrypted emails arrive as standard email threads within the app.
- Guest users: Recipients without Gmail can securely read and reply via their browser.
This ensures a consistent and secure communication experience for all users.
Simple steps to enable encryption
To activate encryption, users only need to click the lock icon while composing an email and select additional encryption. Attachments can also be added as usual.
However, access to this feature depends on administrative settings.
Google noted that administrators must enable Android and iOS access through the client-side encryption (CSE) settings in the Admin Console.
Currently, the feature is available for Enterprise Plus users with the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-ons.
The expansion aims to combine strong data privacy with ease of use. Google says the update allows organizations to handle sensitive information securely while meeting compliance and data sovereignty requirements.
This makes encrypted communication more accessible for businesses, public sector organizations, and enterprises.
