US President Donald Trump has announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on social media, the U.S. president said that the U.S. Navy would immediately begin blocking the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that anyone firing on American ships would be destroyed. He also said that mines in the waterway would be cleared and that other countries would join in the blockade.
Trump stated that the Navy has been instructed to locate ships paying tolls to Iran, adding that any vessel paying Iran would not be granted safe passage. He claimed that the United States initially believed ships would be allowed free passage through the Strait, but said Iran did not allow this.
The U.S. president further said that Iran had promised to keep the Strait of Hormuz open but failed to do so, causing global concern and disruption. He accused Iran of placing mines in the waterway and called it “extortion on an international level,” saying global leaders and the United States would not be subjected to it.
He added that Iran must immediately begin reopening the waterway, accusing it of violating international laws and saying it would not be allowed to benefit from what he called illegal practices.
Trump also claimed that Iran’s navy and air force have been destroyed and that most of its leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed, adding that Iran knows how to resolve the situation.
He further said that a meeting in Islamabad went well and that most points had been agreed upon. He said he was briefed by JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner on talks held in Islamabad, which he said took place under the leadership of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whom he praised as highly capable leaders.
According to Trump, agreement could not be reached on the nuclear issue. He said Iran wants money and nuclear capability, and that the current situation is due to its nuclear ambitions. He added that the U.S. military would eventually eliminate what remains of Iran at the appropriate time.
He said negotiations began in the morning and continued overnight. While some points were agreed upon, he said they were meaningless without resolving the nuclear issue. Trump reiterated his long-standing position that Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons.
