A controversial statement by Muhoozi Kainerugaba has sparked global attention after he demanded $1 billion — and even a wife — from Turkey over its role in Somalia.
The remarks, shared on social media and reported by international outlets, have raised eyebrows across diplomatic circles.
Uganda’s top military commander, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has demanded $1 billion in what he described as compensation for his country’s long-standing military operations in Somalia.
In a highly unusual addition, he also reportedly asked for “the most beautiful Turkish woman” to be given to him as a wife — a claim that has drawn widespread criticism and disbelief.
Linking Somalia operations to Turkey’s gains
Kainerugaba argued that Uganda’s military presence in Somalia under African Union-backed missions has enabled Turkey to expand its economic footprint in the region.
He claimed that Turkish companies secured major contracts in Somalia’s ports, airports, and infrastructure due to the security provided by Ugandan troops.
According to him, these benefits justify what he termed a “security dividend” for Uganda.
Threats and diplomatic tensions
The Ugandan general also warned that Kampala could consider shutting down Turkey’s embassy if his demands are not met.
So far, there has been no official response from either Turkish or Somali authorities regarding these remarks.
Kainerugaba has previously voiced strong support for Israel, even stating his readiness to deploy 100,000 Ugandan soldiers to assist its military operations.
This is not the first time he has made unusual personal demands. In 2022, he publicly expressed interest in marrying Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy.
