Australia has called upon the United States and Iran to return to the negotiating table.
The Australian Foreign Minister said both sides should maintain the ceasefire and resume dialogue. The end of talks without an agreement is disappointing, she said, adding that a prompt and lasting resolution to the dispute is sought. Any further rise in tensions would weigh more heavily on the global economy.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said agreement had been reached on most points, while differences remained on two to three issues. It should not be expected that an agreement could be reached in a single sitting, he said, noting that no party had anticipated a swift accord. Consultations with Pakistan and other friendly countries would continue.
Baghaei said another factor was the complexity of the issues and the prevailing conditions. Some new subjects had also been introduced in the negotiations. He said Iran would continue its efforts on the diplomatic front to secure its rights and interests.
