On the occasion of the Constitution Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in their messages, termed the 1973 Constitution as the foundation of national unity and democracy, adding that its effective implementation is essential for the country’s stability.
According to details surfaced on Friday, President Zardari said: "The constitution serves as the basic legal and political framework of the state, formed through prolonged consultation and consensus, and that its unanimous approval remains its greatest strength. Despite various challenges, the constitution has ensured continuity of the state and played a key role in strengthening institutions."
The president said: "The political parties, at different times, upheld the constitution, while Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto played an important role in the restoration of democracy, with the Charter of Democracy emerging from that struggle. Effective enforcement of the constitution guarantees the protection of public rights and a strong democratic order."
He termed Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as the chief architect of the 1973 Constitution, adding that the document defines the foundations of the judiciary, educational institutions, and administrative system.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said the constitution, approved on 10 April 1973, is a sacred covenant between the state and its people, safeguarding fundamental rights of citizens.
Paying tribute to the framers of the constitution, he said the document provides the basis for a parliamentary democratic system and a strong state structure. He added that the Constitution determines rights and responsibilities, and also sets the course for national unity, development, and prosperity, with its implementation ensuring a bright future for Pakistan.
