The United States carried out fresh strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island, but JD Vance said the move does not indicate any change in Washington’s broader strategy.
According to a US official speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, the strikes targeted military installations on Kharg Island.
The official confirmed that the attacks took place in the early hours of Tuesday and did not affect oil infrastructure.
The source added that some of the locations struck had already been targeted in earlier operations.
This suggests a continued focus on specific military assets rather than expanding the scope of attacks.
Vance: No change in US strategy
Speaking in Budapest, Vice President JD Vance stressed that the strikes were part of an existing plan and not a strategic shift.
He reiterated that the US intends to limit its actions to military targets for now.
Vance made it clear that energy and infrastructure sites would not be targeted unless Iran fails to respond to US demands.
“We're not going to strike energy and infrastructure targets” unless Iran does not engage with proposals, he said.
The Donald Trump administration is seeking a response from Iran by a set deadline as part of ongoing efforts to end the conflict.
Washington is demanding that Iran abandon nuclear weapons ambitions and reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Officials emphasized that the latest strikes were carefully calibrated to avoid disrupting global oil supplies.
Kharg Island is a key oil hub for Iran, making the decision to avoid energy infrastructure particularly significant.
