China has confirmed it is actively mediating between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with both sides agreeing to resume dialogue.
During a press briefing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing is playing a key role in mediating between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
China is working to create favourable conditions and provide a platform for dialogue between the two neighbouring countries.
According to the spokesperson, both Pakistan and Afghanistan appreciate China’s mediation efforts. The two countries have expressed willingness to sit down for talks again, which China described as a “positive development.”
Talks progressing smoothly
China stated that negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan are advancing steadily. The spokesperson added that the process is moving forward in a smooth and stable manner, with both sides showing readiness to engage constructively.
Officials confirmed that the three sides — China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan — have agreed on specific procedures for the talks.
China has maintained close communication with both countries, including holding telephone conversations with their foreign ministers and sending a special envoy for visits in March.
Further details about the negotiations are expected to be shared in due course. The renewed diplomatic efforts come after months of conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Key points of dispute
Islamabad has accused the Afghan Taliban of harbouring terrorists who carry out attacks inside Pakistan. However, Kabul has denied these allegations, calling militancy a domestic issue for Pakistan.
While China did not confirm the exact location of the ongoing discussions, previous statements from both countries suggested that talks were being held in Urumqi, a northwestern city in China.
