United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Tehran had offered Washington a “very significant prize” linked to oil and gas, expressing hope that an agreement to end the conflict could be within reach.
Speaking in the Oval Office, he said Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were leading the discussions and were dealing “with the right people” in Iran.
Tehran has not publicly confirmed any such offer. Iranian officials, however, have been quoted as saying that proposals conveyed through intermediaries have been received and are under review.
The US president said Iran was keen to reach a settlement after weeks of fighting with the United States and Israel. He claimed that Iranian naval and air capabilities had been destroyed and that communications systems had been severely disrupted.
“We are talking to the right people, and they want to make a deal,” he said, adding that Iran wished to reach an agreement “at any cost”. He also said American officials, including Steve Witkoff, Vance and Rubio, were active on the issue.
Trump claimed that Iran had agreed it would never acquire nuclear weapons and said Tehran was now engaging “sensibly”. He added that the United States had gained control of Iranian airspace and had eliminated key elements of its military capability.
He also referred to heavy missile attacks on the UAE, stating that hundreds had been fired.
It is pertinent to note that the remarks marked a change in tone from last week, when the president said he did not favour a ceasefire.
