Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East.
During the call, both leaders addressed the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel and emphasized the importance of regional stability.
The Pakistani premier also conveyed condolences over the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei and congratulated the newly elected Supreme Leader. According to Iranian media, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences on the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei during the conversation.
He also congratulated Iran on the election of the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, expressing hope that the country would continue to progress under his leadership. Sharif said he hoped that Iran would achieve further development and stability under Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership.
Iran says seeks no conflict with regional countries
During the call, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reassured Pakistan that Tehran does not seek confrontation with neighbouring states.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention of targeting or engaging with countries in the region,” Pezeshkian said. However, he added that Iranian strikes on US bases are being carried out within the framework of legitimate self-defense.
The Iranian president also warned that any military base used to launch attacks against Iran would be considered a legitimate target.
Pezeshkian told the Pakistani premier that Iran had previously been engaged in negotiations with Washington to resolve disputes. However, he claimed that US–Israeli attacks were launched while the talks were still ongoing.
The remarks come as tensions continue to rise following military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Pakistan condemns US-Israeli strikes
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the US and Israeli strikes on Iran during the conversation. He expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and people and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations.
Sharif also highlighted Islamabad’s interest in strengthening cooperation among Muslim countries in the region.
Iran warns of global instability if conflict continues
President Pezeshkian cautioned that the ongoing conflict could have serious consequences for global stability.
He said that if the international community fails to address the root causes of the conflict and the military aggression against Iran, global order and security could become unstable.
“The international community should focus on the fundamental issue, otherwise the whole world will face instability,” he warned.
Pezeshkian stressed that failure by international organizations to act could shake global order and security.
