The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province for seven days in view of possible terrorism threats and concerns over public order.
The Punjab Home Department has issued an immediate notification banning public gatherings, rallies and demonstrations. The department stated that, according to intelligence reports, sensitive gatherings could be targeted by terrorists.
Moreover, the reports said that miscreants may target religious scholars attending any gathering in an attempt to create unrest and incite sectarian violence. Officials said precautionary steps were taken in view of fears of sectarian tension and disturbance to public peace.
A ban has been placed on public gatherings of four or more persons across Punjab. Personnel of law enforcement agencies will remain exempt from the restriction during duty hours. The ban will not apply to weddings, funerals or burial-related gatherings.
