India suffered a 76-run defeat at the hands of South Africa, making it essential for them to win their remaining two matches against West Indies and Zimbabwe with a significant margin.
Even then, other results must favour India to secure a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The net run rate scenario has made India's path extremely difficult.
Winning both remaining matches will not be sufficient on its own; India must also rely on other results going in their favour.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra commented, "India can reach the semi-finals only if South Africa defeats West Indies in the match at Ahmedabad."
He added, "If South Africa loses, then we must hope Zimbabwe also defeat South Africa. If India, West Indies, and South Africa all win two matches each, India will have no chance due to a very poor net run rate."
Cricket experts were of the view that although Zimbabwe have performed well in this tournament, beating South Africa will remain a difficult task for them.
Similarly, considering West Indies’ current form, it will not be easy for South Africa to defeat them either.
