Former United States Treasury Secretary Lawrence Henry Summers has resigned from his post at Harvard University after acknowledging links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to a news agency, Summers served as US Treasury Secretary from 1999 to 2001 and as President of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. He also held office as Director of the United States National Economic Council from 2009 to 2010.
He will formally leave the post at the end of this year but will remain on leave during the intervening period. Harvard University initiated an inquiry into Summers after a video emerged in which he admitted before students that he had maintained ties with Jeffrey Epstein.
Earlier, Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Richard Axel of Columbia University also stepped down after acknowledging links with Jeffrey Epstein.
