The Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has granted bail to lawyer and activist Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha in a case related to an alleged altercation with police.
In a parallel development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued notices on their appeals against conviction in the controversial tweets case and sought a response from the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency.
The police altercation case was heard by Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain.
After proceedings, the court granted bail to both Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha. The judge directed the accused to submit surety bonds of Rs10,000 each. The case has been registered at the Secretariat Police Station.
Defense terms case baseless
During the hearing, Advocate Riyasat Ali Azad argued that the case was “baseless” and surfaced suddenly. He stated that even he himself was named as an accused in the case but was unaware that an FIR had been registered.
The defense maintained that the matter was brought to light without prior knowledge of the accused.
IHC hears appeals in controversial tweets case
Separately, the Islamabad High Court took up the appeals filed by Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha against their sentence in the controversial tweets case.
The court issued notices on the appeals and sought a response from the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency. The IHC also called for replies regarding the applications seeking suspension of their sentence.
With bail granted in the police altercation case and notices issued in the tweets case, both matters remain under judicial consideration.
