Three people, including a captain of the Pakistan Army, were martyred while clearing heavy snowfall at Burzil Pass after a sudden avalanche struck during a late-night operation, according to the military’s media wing.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), an operation was launched on the intervening night of January 2 and 3 to clear snow and reopen the Burzil Pass, which had been blocked due to severe snowfall.
The operation was aimed at ensuring the operational movement of the armed forces through the strategic route using heavy machinery in extremely harsh weather conditions.
Capt Asmad led mission to open tunnel
ISPR said Captain Asmad, who was leading the operation to open the tunnel at Burzil Pass, along with two soldiers and a machine operator from the Public Works Department, was buried under snow after a sudden avalanche.
After intense rescue efforts, all four individuals were pulled out. However, Captain Asmad, Sepoy Rizwan, and civilian machine operator Essa embraced martyrdom, while one soldier survived.
The military spokesperson said Captain Asmad and his colleagues sacrificed their lives during a highly challenging mission under extreme weather conditions. Their martyrdom, ISPR added, reflects the unwavering determination of Pakistan’s armed forces to safeguard the motherland under all circumstances.
