The Punjab government has set a two-year time limit for completing retirement-related proceedings of government employees.
Under the proposed law, if action against a retired employee is not completed within two years, the competent authority may grant an extension of service time, subject to conditions. An important amendment bill relating to government employees has reached the Standing Committee of the Punjab Assembly.
The Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (Amendment) Bill 2025 has already been presented in the Punjab Assembly. The bill has proposed key amendments to the law governing proceedings against retired government employees. It makes it mandatory to complete any inquiry against a retired employee within two years.
If proceedings are not concluded within this period, the government will have the authority to extend the time limit. According to the text of the bill, the competent authority may grant such an extension by recording reasons in writing.
The stated purpose of the bill is to fix a clear time limit for pending inquiries against retired employees. The bill also sought to address issues arising from proceedings that lapse due to court decisions.
The Standing Committee of the Punjab Assembly will prepare its recommendations on the bill relating to laws for retired employees. Once approved by the committee, the bill will be presented before the Punjab Assembly for final approval.
Following approval by the Assembly, the Amendment Bill 2025 will come into force with immediate effect.
