The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed rumours about replacing Gautam Gambhir as India’s Test coach, affirming full confidence in his leadership despite recent setbacks in home series.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla clarified that the board has no intention of appointing a new Test coach. His statement came after speculation arose following India’s 0-2 whitewash against South Africa and a prior 0-3 loss to New Zealand.
Media speculation and rumours
Reports had suggested that former cricketer VVS Laxman was being considered as a replacement. Shukla and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia termed these claims baseless, emphasizing that no discussions on changing the coaching setup have taken place.
While recent Test losses have hurt India’s chances in the ICC World Test Championship, the board believes that stability is essential during a transition phase. Quick coaching changes, the BCCI notes, have historically not benefited Indian cricket in the long term.
Gambhir’s approach and board support
Gautam Gambhir has focused on discipline, fearless cricket, and building a strong team mindset since taking charge. The BCCI is willing to provide him the time to implement his vision, acknowledging that rebuilding phases often come with setbacks.
India’s immediate priority is defending its T20 World Cup title, beginning February 7. With senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli absent, the young squad led by Suryakumar Yadav faces high expectations, making continuity in coaching even more critical.
The BCCI highlighted that replacing the head coach mid-cycle across formats could disrupt planning and messaging in the dressing room. Maintaining Gambhir ensures continuity and stability as India prepares for a major global tournament.
Fans divided, board stands firm
Social media reflects mixed opinions, with some calling for accountability while others support Gambhir. The BCCI has drawn a clear line, backing its coach and focusing on performance improvement rather than reacting to pressure.
