Fresh from their title-winning campaign, the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team held a press conference with the trophy at a private hotel, reflecting on their journey, challenges, and the collective effort behind their success.
Head coach Shahid Anwar, mentor Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Pakistan Cricket Board officials were present at the press conference, highlighting the planning and preparation that shaped the team’s campaign.
Fearless cricket
Head coach Shahid Anwar said the team had decided early on to play fearless cricket. He explained that the core plan was to encourage one another and aim not only to win the trophy but also to win hearts.
He revealed that the preparation process began on June 17, when 70 players were called for trials, after which selected players were given opportunities in the ODI tournament.
Anwar said all 70 shortlisted players were evaluated through trials, ensuring merit-based selection. He added that giving players exposure in competitive tournaments helped build confidence and readiness for high-pressure matches.
PM's support boosts morale
Mentor Sarfaraz Ahmed shared details of the team’s meeting with the prime minister earlier in the day, saying the encouragement from the top leadership lifted the players’ spirits. He confirmed that the prime minister announced Rs10 million each for the players in recognition of their achievement.
Sarfaraz expressed hope that this squad would go on to win many more trophies for Pakistan.
Team effort, not one-man show
Sarfaraz Ahmed stressed that the victory was the result of teamwork, not individual brilliance alone. He highlighted strong partnerships, particularly from Usman Khan and Ahmed Hussain, and praised the lower order for delivering under pressure.
He said every player contributed, morale remained high throughout, and joint hard work ultimately led to success.
Aggressive approach
Batsman Sameer Minhas said the team played aggressive cricket against India, following clear instructions from management. He admitted getting out due to his own mistake in the first match against India but said the team’s morale improved significantly after the match against Bangladesh.
Sarfaraz described Sameer’s later innings as extraordinary, while reiterating that labeling the win as a one-man show would be unfair.
Sameer Minhas said he focused on his natural game and credited Allah for his success, adding that he aimed to continue performing for the team in the future. He noted that coaches consistently advised players to play fair cricket, not careless cricket.
The Under-19 captain said management clearly told the players that defeat would be their responsibility, while victory would belong to the team. He said this trust ensured that no player suffered a drop in morale and allowed everyone to play freely.
Unity and responsibility
Player Farhan Yousuf said the management instructed everyone to play natural, fearless cricket. He acknowledged that his performance did not meet expectations but vowed to improve in upcoming matches.
He added that the team’s primary goal was always to demonstrate teamwork and deliver the best performance for Pakistan.
Sarfaraz on mindset and maturity
Sarfaraz Ahmed said the Indian team’s attitude during matches was not positive, but he advised Pakistani players not to respond in the same manner. He told the boys to play cricket in a way that would be memorable and dignified.
He said he saw clear potential in the squad and worked to instill confidence so the players would not feel intimidated on big occasions.
Sarfaraz concluded by saying the team performed exceptionally well and credited the coaching staff for their guidance and preparation. He reiterated that the PM's encouragement and financial reward further motivated the players.
Both coaches and players expressed confidence that this Under-19 squad has the talent and mindset to bring more honours to Pakistan in the future.
