Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Monday met with the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance (PGTA) and assured swift action on key transport issues, including issuance of licenses and provision of parking facilities at major ports.
During the Islamabad meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized that all legitimate concerns of goods transporters, including driving licenses, will be addressed promptly. He highlighted that strikes harm everyone but disproportionately affect those in the transport sector.
The minister also assured the provision of parking at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim to facilitate smoother operations for transporters.
Axle load restrictions in favour
Abdul Aleem Khan reiterated that the axle load restrictions are designed to benefit goods transport owners. He stressed that safety remains a priority, noting the tragic accidents that have claimed the lives of transport workers.
To ensure effective implementation, the minister directed the Secretary for Communications, IG Motorways, and FBR officials to travel to Karachi and continue negotiations directly with transporters.
Northern bypass upgrade announced
The minister confirmed that the Northern Bypass will be expanded to six to eight lanes, aiming to improve traffic flow and reduce delays for goods transport vehicles. This move is expected to provide long-term relief to transporters and commuters alike.
The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance expressed satisfaction with the discussions. Representatives assured full cooperation with federal officials and emphasized their preference for constructive solutions over strikes.
They highlighted the economic losses caused by prolonged strikes and committed to playing a positive role in supporting the country’s logistics and trade sectors.
