A key line in the ISPR press release announcing Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed’s 14-year sentence has triggered a renewed debate among political analysts, who say it hints at deeper links between the former intelligence chief and the PTI founder Imran Khan in connection with the May 9 incidents.
Political commentators argue that the final paragraph of the ISPR statement stands out as the most consequential, as it references ongoing investigations into Faiz Hameed’s alleged political agitation and links with “political elements.”
Analysts say this wording has revived speculation about a possible nexus between Faiz Hameed and the PTI founder in relation to the “heinous and anti-state incidents” of May 9.
According to them, the release suggests that the authorities believe there is clear evidence connecting the PTI leadership to the events of that day.
Several analysts note that Faiz Hameed continues to face long-standing allegations of political provocation and destabilisation, a theme that has resurfaced sharply in the wake of his sentencing.
Context of Faiz–PTI relationship
Commentators add that the historical relationship between Faiz Hameed and the PTI founder — during the latter’s tenure in office and afterward — “requires no explanation or further evidence” to understand their political alignment.
They argue that if the alleged nexus is eventually proven through the ongoing inquiries, the PTI founder could face serious political and legal complications in the months ahead.
Faiz Hameed sentenced to 14 years
Earlier, the ISPR announced that Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed had been awarded 14 years of rigorous imprisonment after a detailed Field General Court Martial (FGCM) that spanned 15 months.
According to the military’s media wing:
-
The trial began on August 12, 2024, under the Pakistan Army Act.
-
Evidence and witness statements relating to four serious charges were examined:
• engaging in political activities
• violating the Official Secrets Act and endangering state safety
• misuse of authority and state resources
• causing wrongful loss to individuals
After thorough scrutiny, the FGCM found him guilty on all counts. His sentence was formally promulgated on December 11, 2025.
Legal rights and oversight
The ISPR stated that the trial adhered strictly to legal and procedural requirements. Faiz Hameed was provided full legal rights, including access to a defense team of his choice.
He retains the right to appeal before the relevant judicial forums.
The Inspectorate of Court Proceedings and Records (ICPR) supervised the entire trial process, ensuring compliance with military law and transparency standards.
The authorities also revealed that Faiz Hameed’s alleged role in political agitation and collusion with political figures is being examined separately. These inquiries will proceed independently from the court martial and could further shape the political landscape.
