US authorities have charged an Afghan man in Texas with threatening to build a bomb and carry out a suicide attack, officials said on Tuesday, as the Trump administration toughens its stance on Afghan migrants following a deadly shooting.
According to the Justice Department, 30-year-old Mohammad Dawood Alokozay of Fort Worth allegedly made the threats in a video posted on TikTok, X and Facebook on November 23. In the footage, he is accused of praising the Taliban and vowing to launch a suicide attack against Americans.
FBI Dallas special agent Joseph Rothrock said the arrest was made after members of the public reported the threatening video, allowing authorities to intervene “before he could commit an act of violence.”
Attorney General Pamela Bondi claimed Alokozay had entered the US during the Biden administration and had stated that he intended to kill Americans.
Alokozay faces up to five years in prison if found guilty of making a threatening interstate communication.
His arrest comes a week after a shooting near the White House in which two National Guard members were targeted. A 29-year-old Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with first-degree murder in that case. Lakanwal had previously served in a CIA-backed Afghan force and arrived in the US through a resettlement program after the 2021 withdrawal.
In response to the incident, President Donald Trump said his administration plans to halt asylum decisions “for a long time,” adding on social media, “We don’t want those people.”
