Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Sunday that no court holds the authority to reject a constitutional amendment, and that the establishment of a constitutional court fulfils the incomplete agenda of the Charter of Democracy.
Addressing the party workers in several cities through a video link on the party’s foundation day, the former foreign minister said that he will not accept any compromise on provincial autonomy. He added that the shortcomings left in the 18th Amendment now stand addressed through the 27th Amendment.
Bhutto-Zardari maintained that the creation of a constitutional court completes the unfinished agenda of the Charter of Democracy. He warned that some individuals attempt to cast controversy on the constitutional court, adding that the legislation remains the sole prerogative of the parliament.
The PPP chairman said that a constitutional court must not assume roles such as launching dam projects or removing an elected prime minister from office. He expressed hope that the constitutional court will restore public confidence.
Bhutto-Zardari added that his party will protect the rights of the people at any cost and will not support any move that weakens the centre.
