Anti-corruption authorities in Bangladesh have recovered about 9.7 kilograms of gold, valued at around $1.3 million, from bank lockers belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, officials said Wednesday.
Officials from the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue said the gold was found after opening lockers seized in September.
“Following a court order, we opened the lockers and discovered around 9.7 kilograms of gold belonging to the former prime minister,” a senior CIC official told AFP, requesting anonymity. The haul included gold bars, coins, and jewelry.
Investigators said Hasina did not deposit some gifts received while in office into the state treasury, known as the Toshakhana, as required by law.
The National Board of Revenue is also investigating possible tax evasion and whether Hasina declared the gold in her filings.
Bangladesh has faced political unrest since the end of Hasina’s tenure, and violence has accompanied campaigning for elections expected in February 2026.
Earlier this month, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death over a crackdown on a student-led uprising that left up to 1,400 people dead, according to the United Nations.
