The Punjab government announced a major step to curb the excessive use of water, with consumers required to pay strictly according to consumption.
According to details, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) in Lahore issued the first tender for the purchase of modern water meters. The Wasa maintained 10,000 smart water meters will be purchased at a cost of Rs500 million. The meters will contain an automated system for meter reading. The pilot project will start in Johar Town A-1 Block.
The Wasa managing director said that consumers will receive online access for meter-reading verification. The installation of smart meters will cost Rs35,000, while citizens will have the option to obtain meters through easy instalments.
Moreover, the Wasa set up a revolving fund for the purchase of water meters. The Wasa will expand the project through the purchase of meters three times a year via tenders.
