Multan has witnessed a sharp rise in egg prices with the arrival of winter, as profiteers reportedly dye farm eggs to resemble country ones to earn unlawful profit.
According to details, the residents said the price of a dozen eggs has reached record levels, with farm eggs sold at about Rs360 per dozen and organic eggs at Rs430. Shopkeepers said distinguishing between the two types has become difficult due to the deceptive colouring.
A buyer said he purchased a dozen eggs at Rs430, believing them to be country eggs, but the colour faded after he returned home. He said the eggs had been artificially dyed to appear genuine.
One of the vendors said city demand had increased while supply had declined. He said traders used tea leaves or other substances to colour farm eggs brown to make them appear as country eggs and sell them at higher prices.
Citizens appealed to the authorities to control the rising prices and to take action against those selling counterfeit country eggs in local markets.
