The net has been tightened further against illegal Afghan residents in the country.
Sources divulged on Wednesday, the Afghan citizens holding fake Pakistani identity cards have come under the National Database and Registration Authority's (Nadra) scrutiny. Sources said that suspicious identity cards were identified through specialised software, revealing that more than 250,000 individuals had obtained fake Pakistani identity cards.
The software identified suspicious individuals by examining the composition of family trees. Among those holding fake identity cards, Afghan citizens constituted the largest number.
According to sources, Afghan residents were included in the family trees of Pakistanis living in Pishin, Chaman, and Quetta, while agents charged large sums to register foreigners in the Pakistani records.
The Nadra officials have made it clear that identity cards held by those with fraudulent documents have begun to be blocked automatically.
Holders of blocked identity cards have been instructed to visit a Nadra office for verification. Identity cards not verified within the prescribed period will be cancelled.
