The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a major update on Shreyas Iyer’s health after the 30-year-old suffered a serious on-field injury during the third ODI against Australia.
Scans have revealed a laceration to his spleen following an impact on his left lower rib cage.
In a statement released on Thursday, the BCCI confirmed that Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding during the match on October 25 in Sydney. He was immediately taken to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the board’s statement read.
Subsequent scans revealed a laceration injury to his spleen, prompting doctors to keep him under close medical supervision.
Stable but under observation
According to the BCCI, Iyer is “medically stable and recovering well.” The statement added that the Indian team’s medical unit, in consultation with specialists from both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his progress.
“The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the statement further mentioned.
How incident happened
The injury occurred when Iyer sprinted back from backward point to take a stunning running catch, dismissing Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. However, he landed awkwardly, clutching his side in visible pain before being assisted off the field by medical staff.
Prior to the incident, Iyer had registered scores of 11 and 61 in the first two ODIs, both of which India lost.
Despite Iyer’s absence, India bounced back strongly in the final ODI, defeating Australia by nine wickets courtesy of a Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli partnership. However, Australia claimed the series 2–1.
The BCCI has confirmed that Iyer will miss the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, beginning on October 29. His participation in the ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to start on November 30, remains uncertain and will depend on his recovery timeline.
