Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that Pakistan played a role in achieving the ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking to the ministers in Jahanian on national progress, he said the country had made history in pursuing economic stability and securing diplomatic successes. The prime minister has termed the country’s efforts as a historic victory.
He said the armed forces had performed with distinction, with officers and personnel from the Air Force, Navy and Army contributing to national defence. He said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Gen Syed Asim Munir, had led from the front, while the Chief of Air Staff raised the national flag through successful operations that India had not been able to overcome.
On the domestic front, the prime minister has acknowledged the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and her team, saying, "The Punjab CM had worked tirelessly." He said her leadership during the recent floods and ongoing governance in Punjab reflected commitment to public service.
The prime minister reflected on the economic challenges faced upon assuming office. He said the government had no choice but to engage with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avoid default. He said the country had emerged from the crisis, and current economic indicators were showing improvement. He said Pakistan was now moving towards economic stability.
On the diplomatic front, he said Pakistan had achieved successes unprecedented in its history. He referred to a recent defence agreement with Saudi Arabia, stating that the Saudi leadership had shown affection towards the Pakistani people.
He recalled his address to the United Nations General Assembly and meetings with world leaders, including a meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Washington. Discussing the situation in Gaza, he said all present leaders urged the US president to help end the conflict. The president said that President Trump promised to work towards a ceasefire, which has now taken effect.
He said that just moments before the ceasefire, children were still being killed. He labelled the ceasefire as a major service to humanity, and said all those who contributed to it would be rewarded for their role. He said the credit goes to President Trump for leading the effort, and that the ceasefire agreement was reached in Pakistan’s presence.
The prime minister said that although many world leaders were present, it was by the grace of the Higher Power that Pakistan was given special recognition. He said that if any leader was allowed to speak outside the set agenda, it was Pakistan — something he attributed to hard work and sincerity.
He said that if the nation could come together to decide on changing Pakistan’s economic destiny, then just as victory was achieved in war, success could also be secured in the economic field through collective effort.
The prime minister said he congratulated the newly-elected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister and affirmed his respect for the assembly’s decision. He said all of the parties must work together in Pakistan’s best interest.
Those present at the event included Member of the National Assembly Chaudhry Iftikhar Nazir, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Minister of State Abdul Rahman Kanjo, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Special Assistant Talha Burki, along with other members of the national and provincial assemblies from Jahanian.
