Three senior Qatari officials from the Amiri Diwan were killed in a tragic car crash near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Qatar’s embassy in Cairo confirmed on Sunday. Two others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Qatari embassy said that the deceased and injured officials were traveling near Sharm el-Sheikh when the accident occurred.
The embassy expressed its condolences and confirmed that the bodies of the deceased, along with the injured, would be repatriated to Doha later on Sunday.
Details of incident
According to two Egyptian security sources, the vehicle carrying the Qatari delegation overturned on a sharp curve roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh. Initial reports suggest the car was en route to the resort city, though authorities have not released an official cause of the crash.
The fatal incident occurred just days after Qatari, Turkish, and Egyptian officials took part in indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, which helped broker the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas as part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiative.
The coastal city is also scheduled to host a global summit on Monday, where world leaders and diplomats are expected to discuss the final details of the Gaza ceasefire framework.
