US President Donald Trump has described the preliminary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas as a “momentous breakthrough,” predicting it will pave the way for large-scale reconstruction and lasting peace in Gaza.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Trump said the deal — which is still awaiting approval from the Israeli government — would unlock financial support from wealthy regional countries to help rebuild the war-torn enclave.
While specific details of the first phase of the deal remain unclear, Trump expressed optimism about the region’s recovery.
“You have tremendous wealth in that part of the world by certain countries, and just a small part of that, what they make, will do wonders for Gaza,” he said.
Trump added that several nations are expected to “step up and put up a lot of money” to support reconstruction efforts, though he did not name any specific countries or outline a financial framework.
Trump hails “end of war”
The president went on to declare that his administration had “ended the war,” even as Israel’s cabinet had yet to formally approve the ceasefire.
“As you know, last night, we reached a momentous breakthrough in the Middle East — something that people said was never going to be done,” Trump said.
“We ended the war and, on a much bigger basis, created peace, and I think it’s going to be a lasting peace — hopefully an everlasting peace,” he added.
Trump further noted that the release of captives under the agreement could happen “Monday or Tuesday,” without elaborating on how many hostages were included in the first phase of the deal.
Details yet to emerge
The ceasefire, preliminarily approved by both sides, is expected to involve a phased truce and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners. However, many specifics — including timelines, security guarantees, and humanitarian provisions — remain undisclosed.
Israeli officials have yet to confirm final approval, and analysts note that disagreements over border control and reconstruction funding could delay the agreement’s implementation.
