Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is preparing to resume its long-awaited flight operations to the United Kingdom by the end of this year.
The airlines' Manchester and Birmingham routes will reopen by the Christmas season and London flights expected to return before Easter, according to PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan.
In an exclusive interview with Samaa TV, Khan shared key updates on the national carrier’s UK operations, upcoming privatization, and fleet investment plans.
UK routes set for revival
Abdullah Hafeez Khan revealed that until 2019, PIA earned nearly Rs40 billion annually from its British flight operations, which accounted for 37% of the airline’s total revenue.
“Manchester and Birmingham flight operations will start by the Christmas season, while the London route is likely to be restored before Easter,” the spokesperson confirmed.

He added that PIA has received permissions not only for passenger services but also for cargo operations, calling it an important step for reviving the airline’s presence in one of its most profitable international markets.
Cargo operations to boost exports
Highlighting the trade potential, Khan said there is significant demand for Pakistani products in the UK markets, and resuming cargo services will create new opportunities for exporters.
“British markets offer enough potential for Pakistani goods, and with flight and cargo operations restarting, we can strengthen trade connectivity between the two countries,” he said.
Fleet investment remains priority
The spokesperson acknowledged that PIA has faced challenges in upgrading its fleet due to its ongoing privatization process. “We should have invested in our aircraft fleet two or four years ago,” he said, admitting delays in modernization efforts.
“Because of privatization, a decision regarding aircraft upgrades could not be taken. However, the successful bidder will first focus on investing in the aircraft to enhance efficiency and service quality,” Khan added.
Privatisation bids expected by Oct 31
Discussing the airline’s privatization timeline, Khan confirmed that bids for PIA’s privatization will be received by October 31.
He expressed optimism that privatization will mark a turning point for the national carrier, paving the way for improved services, modernized aircraft, and stronger financial stability.
