More than 6.5 million rupees worth of solar panels were stolen from 50 schools in Rajanpur district during 2022-23, according to an audit report presented before the Punjab Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee-III.
The committee expressed concern over the thefts and directed that police investigations be launched across the province amid suspicions of similar incidents at other schools.
Committee member Tanveer Aslam Malik called for strict letters to be issued to district police officers in areas where panels were stolen. He also demanded details on how many schools were affected and how much, if any, of the stolen equipment had been recovered.
The Education Department said police reports had been registered over the thefts, while the Audit Department noted that district education authorities failed to protect the solar panels.
