Defence Minister Khawaja Asif expressed on Thursday support for the creation of new provinces in the country and has proposed the construction of small water reservoirs in Barani (rain-fed) areas, including Sialkot, to mitigate damage from floods and heavy rainfall.
Speaking to media in Islamabad, Asif endorsed the idea of forming new provinces. He said that a national debate on the matter is welcome and that any decision regarding the formation of provinces should follow such a debate. Asif added that there would be no objection if new provinces are formed in the country.
The defence minister also suggested building small water reservoirs in the barani regions of the country, including Sialkot, alongside large dams. He said that the risk of floods arises each year and acknowledged the ongoing controversy over the construction of large dams.
Asif said: "If experts consider it necessary, large dams should be built, though they would take at least six to seven years to complete. In the meantime, smaller dams should be constructed as they can be completed more quickly and cover a wider area."
