Flight operations at Sialkot International Airport have remained suspended since Thursday morning due to flooding in the city and surrounding areas.
According to a NOTAM issued by the Pakistan Airport Authority, the airport was earlier meant to be closed for flights from 10am to 10pm. Passengers have been faced difficulties as the suspension disrupted travel plans.
Airport authorities said operations will resume once floodwater is cleared and the runway is safe for use.
According to a spokesperson, floodwater is still being drained from different parts of the airport. A formal NOTAM has already been issued regarding the suspension of operations, which was initially extended until 10pm on August 30.
“All officers and employees of SIAL are working day and night to remove floodwater. Additional resources, including dewatering pumps, are being deployed,” Umair Khan said.
Airport infrastructure remains safe
The spokesperson assured that all equipment installed at the airport remains completely safe. “Most central areas of the airport, including the terminal building, parking, and runway, are secure,” he added.
PIA shifts flights to Lahore
Meanwhile, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced that its operations at Sialkot have been temporarily shifted to Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
“Passengers of affected flights should contact the PIA call centre at 111-786-786 for updated schedules and timings,” the airline’s spokesperson said.
