Air India announced it will suspend non-stop flights to Washington DC starting September 1, 2025, citing a shortage of aircraft due to the ongoing retrofitting of its Boeing 787-8 fleet.
The airline began upgrading 26 planes last month, a program expected to continue until the end of 2026.
The extended absence of multiple aircraft, combined with the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, has complicated long-haul operations, forcing longer routes and increasing operational challenges.
Passengers with bookings to or from Washington DC after the suspension date will be contacted for rebooking on other flights or offered full refunds.
Air India will maintain one-stop options to Washington DC via New York, Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco through partner airlines Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. It will also continue non-stop services to six other North American cities, including Toronto and Vancouver.
