A case has been registered against a security manager at Wankhede Stadium for allegedly stealing Indian Premier League (IPL) jerseys worth over Rs652,000 from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) official merchandise store.
According to officials, the incident came to light after a routine audit revealed a significant discrepancy in the merchandise inventory. The Marine Drive Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter under Section 406 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to criminal breach of trust.
The complaint, lodged by BCCI employee Hemang Bharat Kumar Amin (44) on July 17, stated that jerseys belonging to prominent IPL franchises—including Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru—were found missing. Following the report, BCCI officials reviewed surveillance footage, which reportedly captured the accused carrying a cardboard box out of the premises.
The case has raised concerns over the internal security protocols at one of India's most iconic cricket venues. The police are currently conducting further investigations and no arrests have been made yet.
Meanwhile, the IPL, which remains one of the most lucrative and widely followed cricket leagues globally, concluded its 2025 season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinching their maiden title by defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in the final. The mini-auction for the 2026 season is expected to take place in January or February next year, with the tournament scheduled to commence around March-April.
Earlier this year, the IPL 2025 mega auction was held in Saudi Arabia, marking the first time such an event took place outside India.
