Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday handed over a Rs5 million cheque to the father of international mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Shahzeb Rind in recognition of the athlete’s contributions to Pakistan’s global sporting image.
Khair Muhammad - the father of the Baloch combat sports star - met the premier at the Prime Minister’s Office, where the amount was officially disbursed on behalf of the federal government.
PM Shehbaz appreciated Shahzeb Rind’s achievements in international competitions and extended his best wishes for future events.
The development comes days after the federal government faced criticism for failing to fulfill earlier promises made to the decorated fighter. Shahzeb had publicly voiced his frustration over the delay, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz to take notice of the matter.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar had earlier issued a public apology to the athlete, citing a “misunderstanding” as the reason for the delay.
Taking to social media, Mr Tarar said, “There was an unfortunate delay in fulfilling our commitment to Shahzeb Rind due to miscommunication. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our appreciation for his services.”
He added that the Prime Minister had taken “strict notice” of the situation and directed authorities to resolve the matter without further delay.
Shahzeb Rind, known for his performance in international MMA events and recent victory in a high-profile bout against an Indian opponent, has become a prominent symbol of Pakistan’s emerging presence in global combat sports.
