Ahmed Daniyal - who made his international debut for Pakistan in the second T20I against Bangladesh on Tuesday - became visibly emotional as he recalled his late father’s unwavering support.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the 26-year-old pacer shared heartfelt moments from his journey, revealing how the news of his selection touched his family deeply.
“When I played for Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2021, I had this hope in my heart that one day I would play for Pakistan,” he said. “Today that moment has arrived, but my father is no longer here to see it. It’s all because of his prayers.”
Daniyal, who was informed of his selection by head coach Mike Hesson, said he immediately called his mother upon hearing the news. “She was overjoyed. She has prayed a lot for me. The entire family is happy and I’m excited. I cannot express my feelings in words,” he said.
The right-arm pacer, who overcame a serious shoulder injury in 2022 that sidelined him for several months, credited his late father for always encouraging him to pursue cricket.
“He never stopped me from playing. He used to say, ‘One day I want to see you on TV wearing Pakistan’s jersey.’ Four months after his death, I’m fulfilling that dream,” Daniyal shared, struggling to hold back tears.
The fast bowler also spoke about the supportive environment within the national side. “All the players support each other. It feels like a family,” he said.
