Awami National Party (ANP) senior leader Maulana Khan Zaib was killed in a targeted firing by unidentified assailants near Shandai Mor, close to the Khar Tehsil Headquarters in Bajaur.
The incident also claimed the life of his companion, Dr Tariq, while three other individuals sustained serious injuries.
According to sources, Zaib was campaigning for the upcoming Aman Pason rally scheduled for July 13 in Bajaur when the attack occurred.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the injured were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
– ANP announces 3-day mourning –
The ANP has announced three days of mourning over the martyrdom of Maulana Khan Zaib.
Provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain condemned the attack, saying, "It is not merely an assault on ANP but on Pashtun awareness, peace, and the politics of resistance."
He said that the attack indicates that terrorists have once again been given a free hand in the region.
All political activities will remain suspended during the three-day mourning period, he added.
