The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab and Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) have issued alerts warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in various parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) starting from July 5, with the situation expected to intensify around 9th and 10th Muharram (July 5-6).
According to PDMA spokesperson, strong monsoon spells are forecast to hit several districts across Punjab, with a significant risk of heavy rains during key Muharram processions. Authorities have advised procession organizers and the public to exercise extreme caution and take preventive measures in light of the anticipated weather conditions.
Safety advisory issued for Muharram processions
The PDMA director general has urged local administrations to ensure safety arrangements during Muharram processions. "Keep a safe distance from electric poles and wires, avoid standing on old or dilapidated rooftops, and refrain from crossing rivers and streams during heavy rains," the DG stated.
The PDMA emphasized that risk agencies must remain especially vigilant on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, as these days may witness the heaviest downpour, posing risks to lives and public gatherings.
FFD warns of flooding in rivers and hilly areas
The Flood Forecasting Division Lahore also issued a flood alert to all relevant agencies, warning of heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of major rivers from July 6. A significant increase in river flow is expected by July 7.
According to the FFD:
-
Flooding may occur in rivers connected to the Kabul River.
-
Mountainous streams and rivers in Dera Ghazi Khan (DG Khan) are at high risk of flash flooding.
-
Urban flooding is also likely in low-lying areas of northern Punjab and parts of Balochistan.
Authorities on high alert
Both PDMA and FFD have directed all disaster response teams, district administrations, and local bodies to remain on high alert during the coming days. The government is monitoring the weather situation closely and may issue further instructions as forecasts update.
Residents, particularly in flood-prone and hilly regions, have been advised to stay informed through official weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor activities during intense rainfall.
