A mild earthquake shook Lahore and parts of Punjab early Tuesday.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), Islamabad, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4, with its epicentre located 25 kilometres south-southwest of Lahore, at the coordinates 31.33°N and 74.23°E, and at a depth of 14 kilometres.
Tremors were felt in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, Kasur, and other cities. Citizens rushed out of their homes and workplaces fearing aftershocks, although the shaking lasted only a few seconds.
Officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed the seismic activity, while rescue and emergency services remained on alert as a precaution.
Why earthquakes happen?
Seismologists explain that earthquakes occur due to sudden movements of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s crust.
Pakistan is located near the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates, making it particularly prone to seismic activity.
