At least 11 people lost their lives while 35 others sustained injuries in various rain-related accidents across Punjab during the ongoing monsoon spell, according to a detailed report issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Saturday.
The report, which covers the period from June 25 to June 27, highlights a total of 25 incidents caused by torrential rains and strong winds.
Most of the casualties were attributed to the collapse of roofs and boundary walls, a recurring hazard during the monsoon season.
A PDMA spokesperson said that incidents were reported from several districts, including Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, and Khanewal. The spokesperson further noted that emergency services had been mobilised promptly in all affected areas.
Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed local authorities to ensure the best possible medical assistance to the injured.
“On the instructions of the Chief Minister Naryam Nawaz financial compensation will be provided to the families of the deceased,” he added.
Mr Kathia urged citizens to avoid residing in structurally compromised buildings, warning that old and decaying structures pose a serious threat during heavy rainfall.
The PDMA also confirmed that the current spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until July 1. The department has advised the public to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during the period.
